St Helen’s Island conservation project protects seabirds from common pests
St Helen’s Island, a key seabird breeding site in the Isles of Scilly, is facing a sharp decline in ground- nesting bird populations—nearly 20% in five years—due to predation by invasive rats. To protect species like puffins, razorbills, and Manx shearwaters, Envu is partnering with the Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust and Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) to eradicate the rat population using targeted, environmentally responsible methods, including Harmonix® Rodent Paste. The project aims to restore and protect vital seabird habitats without harming non-target species, highlighting the importance of proactive conservation efforts.
“The Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust and RSPB have both said that the removal of rats will help ground nesting bird populations and have called for more action to enhance, preserve and restore habitats.”
